Aphids (Hemiptera:
Sternorrhyncha: Aphididae) are one of the most economically
important groups of insects as agricultural pests and vectors of plant
diseases. This website provides an account of 67 species of common
aphids of the southern Indian state of Karnataka. This site has been
developed as an identification aid to common aphids of Karnataka, many
of which also occur in other parts of India and the world. Brief
diagnostic accounts, based mainly on external characters to aid in field
identification and also supported by other taxonomic characters and
photographs, have been given for the species included.
For viewing some sections
of this site properly, you need to have the Java Virtual Machine version
1.4.2 or greater (also called Java runtime environment) installed in
your computer. (Note: For Macintosh users, the OS comes preinstalled
with Java Virtual Machine.) Java Virtual Machine appropriate for your
computer / browser can be freely downloaded and installed from
www.java.com.
We hope the site will be
informative and useful to economic entomologists, plant protection
workers and students of entomology.
